March is known for its winds and madness and the beginning of Spring. Perhaps it is no surprise then that it was named after the Roman god, Mars. He was the god of agriculture and war. The word prompt this month is ... WAR The Galactic War (remember the word limit!), the war on the Federation, the war for hearts and minds, the war against Man's baser instincts? I can't wait to read what war you will wage. For the second challenge: Back in the 1930's, Ogden drew up an 850 word basic vocabulary. These words were used to teach English as a second language after WWII and was envisioned as a tool for peace, by breaking down communication barriers. The vocabulary list can be found HERE and in alphabetical order HERE. Your challenge is to write a ficlet using ONLY these words. Enjoy! |

Please, Miss - what about names (of characters, ships, computers...)? My views are my own
VILA: I'm entitled to my opinion. AVON: It is your assumption that we are entitled to it as well that is irritating. Twitter: @TravisinaB7 |

I don't see any of those names in the list. ![]() It's challenging - especially when words like "said" and "was" are not there!! |

When have you rebels ever stuck to the rules? ![]() Tips - think abstract / poetry /outside the box. If that feels like 'cheating, Ogden did allow for a further 200 specialist words so I guess proper nouns might come into that category... They are called challenges! ![]() |

Sweet, the chemicals in blood. A song of living. Lock on. Touch feathery nerves. Bite through the fat smells of male. Drain his current, slowly, slowly. Now mine. Red to green. Sweet. No. Strange, thin, white, wrong. No song. Salt....Salt. No food. Tired. Slip, flag. So tired. So very tired. Waiting. Waiting. Tired. Green to grey. Sudden. A girl smell. Fertile. Hope for bright songs. Male. Male. Male. This... Strong smell. Match for girl. This....thin smell. Food. Bite through thin male smell. Sip...Sip. Taste ill. Thick. Rough. Brown. Waste wash. Sip.. sip. Still a song. Song for living. Thunder shake. Violent whips of wind. Needles of rain. A strange, slow, acid pain. Fat with pain. Black with pain. Boiling pain. Boiling. Just because I can't sing doesn't mean I won't.

THE FIVE HUNDRED YEAR WAR It was the eighth century of the second calendar. The last five hundred years, since the fall of the Federation, had mostly consisted of one war after another. Two opposing religions had developed. Both sides were dedicated to the complete annihilation of the other. Terrifying new methods of death had been devised. Hideous chemical weapons were rife. New technology had been developed that could destroy whole star systems at the touch of a button. And then He returned. The God of both religions. He had been preserved in stasis by accident. Preserved from ageing a single day. And He was confused. How was He God? It’s true He had been involved in the fall of the Federation, but it had almost been by accident. He expected Blake to be remembered as a hero. And yet it was He who was held up as a deity. Both sides were tired. Sick of war. The never-ending war. Did His return represent a chance for peace? A great conference was called. The two utterly beautiful High Priestesses were knelt before Him in the Great Chamber of the Imperial Palace. “Please stand up”, He said, “you don’t have to kneel at my feet”. They obeyed. “There’s one thing I don’t understand”, He questioned. “What’s that my Lord?”, said Sativa. “Please tell us, your Magnificence”, added Marussia. “I’ve had a couple of days to study your religions, and they seem no different. What have you been fighting and killing for over the last five hundred years?” “Tell us what you see before you, your Incredibleness”, Sativa said. “I see a solid diamond floor and two very beautiful women”, He said. “And what else, your Remarkableness”, prompted Marussia. “I see you Sativa dressed in a stunning yellow fur uniform, and I see you Marussia in an equally stunning blue fur uniform.” A look of horror started to cross His face. Five hundred years of war and both sides had it wrong. His Royal Mounties should be in red. Edited by trevor travis on 04 March 2017 22:52:37 |

The Calm before the Storm "Cry havoc and let loose the dogs of war!” That was a favorite saying of an instructor of mine in Officer's Training School. I still think about it today. Now, if you ask me, I'd admit that my favorite quote is, “War is Hell!” It was something a seasoned General in the days of the Old Calendar was supposed to have said. I think his name was Sherman. That sort of quote I can wrap my head around. War is hell. And yet, it's my job. I always wanted to be a soldier, even as a kid. I think we all do- that or a Pursuit Ship captain, or a great scientist- whatever- but I wanted to be a soldier and that is what I am. First and foremost. After graduating from Officer's School, I climbed the ladder until I reached the rank of Major and then I got disillusioned by the inequality, greed and downright criminality of the Federation's military machine. I absconded to the Resistance. And besides, their food is so much better... I worked hard fighting other people's wars and became a sort of cult figure in the mercenary business. Oh, my training did me good. I was always very good at military tactics and planning. It served me well and before long I was known as the mercenary to call if you wanted your war won. And the title mercenary is fine by me. I can conduct my war games and fight the Federation simultaneously. So I don't mind being called a mercenary, it's a valid title, only I'm a rebel at heart and my aim after going AWOL has always been to crush the Federation from its underpinnings up. And I've been successful. More than five planets free from Federation influence in the last few years.. And now this one- Albian. I am stuck in with the local rebels and my plans are succeeding. You see, the mercenary moniker has helped in building up a network of businesses and people to help me supply materiel and food, and whatever else is needed on each planet I contract to help. I don't just take the money and run, as many do. I hope people will see I am a man of my word and that perhaps in that there is a certain honor. At least I hope so. It's been a tough life at times, but also very rewarding, fighting for the rights of the 'little guy'. Well, that's all I have time for at the moment. We are to storm the Control Room at 0400 and I want to double check the troops and the newly-acquired ordinance we're going to use to blow the hardened steel doors off of their hinges. Wish me luck, and keep that last bit of information quiet if you would. If all goes well, this could be planet number six for me. And damn it, I'm going to keep going or die trying- as all soldiers do. Hey, after the battle, how about you and me meeting at the nearest local and have a drink together? Good- that will give me something to look forward to after the battle is won- a double Scotch! Cry havoc- and all that jazz. Zil: Oneness must resist the Host.

A soldier's job is to win wars. If we didn't have wars, we wouldn't have soldiers. Wars are won by destroying the enemy's ability to fight, or by destroying their will to fight. These were the first lessons taught at the academy, but I already knew this. I had wanted to be a soldier all my life. I had wanted to go to war all my life. My family wasn't elite, so I'd never make general, but that was fine with me. I didn't want to sit on my backside at HQ, I wanted to fight, to be the right soldier in the right place at the right time to end a war. It was my dream. But The Federation had become so powerful that it never fought a war, not a real war. So I applied those lessons in the only wars The Federation had left, little wars against little enemies, poorly trained rabble at Auros and Zircasta. In each case, in one fell swoop I destroyed both the enemy's ability to fight and their will to fight. I won my little wars, for all the good it did me. On Albion another Space Major took a different approach. He installed a massive bomb, and threatened to set it off if the planet rebelled. His threat failed to destroy their will to fight, and his bomb failed to destroy their ability to fight. If it had succeeded, he would have murdered an entire planet to win his little war, and The Federation would have made him a hero. I won two little wars and they court marshaled me over a few thousand civilians. They say I'm not a real soldier any more because I was drummed out of the service. Well, none of us are real soldiers, because there are no real wars left to fight. The Federation has become so powerful that no one is willing to fight a real war, a big war, against them. At least no one in this galaxy. I may not be a real soldier anymore, but I will make real soldiers out of them. I will give them a real war, a big war. I shall fulfill my dream, only in reverse. I am the right soldier in the right place at the right time to start a war, the final war. I shall have my revenge, and I shall have my war. My only regret is that they will never know it was me. |
