This episode grew on me when I realised it wasn't a bad depiction of pacifism but a very realistic portrayal of a delusional dictator.

Agreed.

There was one last flash, and then he was gone.

Good old Vila! I wonder what order the s3 episodes were filmed in? This one felt a bit clunky, and it was only the regulars who kept it together.

That was lots of fun - I enjoyed the ep more than I was expecting to, thanks to the company! Great comments - relevant, irrelevant and irreverent - everything a rewatch should be. Smile

Cheers, everyone - hope to see you next week for Dawn!

Dawn's a lovely gal...

Bit hot and spicy with that pepper mill.

But seriously for a moment..
Yes re AA's comment Aftermath and Powerplay did feel more polished it wouldn't surprise me if something like Volcano and Dawn were filmed first.. Does anyone know for sure?

I think Powerplay was filmed first. David Maloney directed this episode, so that he could ease Steven & Josette into their roles... he wanted to be their first director.

Beyond that I'm not sure, but weren't Aftermath and City recorded one after the other... Vere is director of both and that's how it was done for Seasons B/C/D - two episodes with the same director.

We didn’t have a chance to discuss it fully during the rewatch, but what I really like about Volcano, as with so many other B7 scripts, is that it’s not spoon-fed to you. It’s up to you to work out what’s going on with the Pyroans.

Most importantly, we have Hower. He’s a man who claims to be a pacifist. But we see him kill his own son, simply because of a difference of opinions on their future. And how does he control his people? Like this. “We have taught them peace from the cradle, and we have blocked, usually with a minute electric shock, every tendency towards an aggressive act. Plus of course, daily psychological propaganda.”

Finally, we see him murder his entire people, because the Federation are coming and he’s longer going to be in command. Not even Hitler went that far.

Bershar is an interesting one. He seems to have broken the conditioning. While doing a deal with Servalan could be seen as an act of treachery, does he actually have the good of his people in mind? Would he actually end the tyranny if in charge?

And then the ordinary Pyroans. They do come across as wet fishes. But is this because of their conditioning? Just how ‘minute’ are Hower’s electric shocks? Are they just normal men and women who have ‘conditioned’ over a number of generations under Hower and his descendants, and this is why they’re so wet and uninspiring? They remind me of the people stumbling along the corridors at the beginning of The Way Back. Does Hower keep them drugged up as well?

Hower comes across as the worst kind of dictator. A man whose uses both physical and psychological torture to keep his people docile.
