Tarvin: "Have you forgotten Zolat Four?"
Jenna: "Is it worth remembering?"
Tarvin: "Just the two of us in the mountains."
Jenna: "And three hundred customs guards."
Tarvin: "You saved my life."
Jenna: "We all make mistakes."
Tarvin: "I thought you liked me."
Jenna: "Oh, I did. Then."

Lurena has offered us this illustration as a February / Valentine challenge. So, how much did Jenna like Tarvin?

It was all a mistake. She thought he was his twin brother Marvin.

After they had disposed of the body, Blake asked her, "So how did you and Tarvin meet?"

"It was a long time ago..." she answered evasively.

"You were close?"

"Perhaps. It's not important now."

Not important now...not even to shed a tear for...but so important then.

She had been seeking an escape from the succession of suitors her mother had insisted she meet. It was useless to protest; her mother obeyed her father in all things and he had decided it was time to capitalise on his only child's beauty and auction her to the highest bidder. So she had submitted to being paraded like meat before them: elderly men with guts like cushions, moist lips and fat wallets; young men all mascaraed lashes and lip-liner, their preference other men but as scions of important families, expected to produce heirs; middle aged men in high political positions, cruel-eyed with a bruising grip. It made her sick to contemplate union with any of them.

Something in her refused to accept her fate meekly. Jenna attended an exclusive educational facility with other daughters of the wealthy; a finishing school that prepared them for a future as bored hostesses in gilded cages. Not all of them were as closely guarded as she was, and there were opportunities to arrange an overnight stay at their homes and then slip out to visit one of the dubious entertainment palaces that surrounded the Space ship docking areas. Her generous parental allowance bought her and her friends a private box where, unseen, she would drink cocktails, smoke turquoise cigarettes and flirt with any attractive young man that caught her eye.

She noticed Tarvin almost at once. She learned later he was smuggling shipments of spirits to the Naughty Lady, her palace of choice that evening but that only increased his allure. Within a month she had fallen for him so hard that she agreed to leave Earth as his lover, embracing his smuggler's life style, so different from her circumscribed existence on Earth and applied her formidable intelligence to learning how to pilot his ships. In Amagon society, her gender proved no obstacle to advancement, although she had to learn various tricks to defend her virtue early on and she discovered in herself a taste for danger that made the material hardships she occasionally suffered, acceptable.

But Tarvin had eventually proved both a faithless lover and treacherous ally. While running a shipment of contraband wine for him, Jenna's ship had been stopped and boarded and, although the faked papers for the shipment were accepted, a cache of diamonds was found among her possessions. She realised later that Tarvin, already tiring of her, had used her in a test run for future operations, knowing and not caring that she might get caught. She was arrested, and, when her identity was discovered, her parents too were taken for questioning. Although later released, the experience proved fatal to her mother. Jenna herself was sentenced to two years in a correction facility, an experienced that polished the survival skills she had learned with Tarvin.

Had she been close to him? She had believed so and had been wrong. Her judgement in such matters was not good and had in fact, led to her last arrest. A rookie mistake to trust any lieutenant of Largo's, however attractive. Would she ever trust herself to get close to another?

Well, she acknowledged as she smiled up at the curly haired man beside her, some dreams were worth having. This time it would be different.

Love the idea of Jenna's backstory! I've always wanted to know more about this too.

Tarvin bore a reptilian smile. “Having made payment in advance, you don’t mind if I check the merchandise?”

Jenna shrugged. “Check all five hundred crates if you wish.”

Tarvin’s smile turned wary. “That won’t be necessary. Come, we’ll be late.”

Jenna balked. “I’m a smuggler, not a gun runner.”

Tarvin raised a wary eyebrow. “Is there a problem with the shipment?”

“Of course not.”

“Then it won’t hurt for you to meet the buyer.” Tarvin’s smile turned cold. “I insist.”

Jenna nodded. “I must contact my next customer. They will worry if I am late.”

+

Jenna and Tarvin stood in a wooded valley with four Amagons. Opposite stood six sharp dressed men with dangerous eyes. The oldest stepped forward. “I am Largo. You are Jenna? A pleasure. You must come and work for me. I will make it more profitable for you than this pirate.”

Tarvin bristled. “Privateer.”

Largo asked, “What’s the difference?”

Tarvin smiled. “Price.”

Largo replied, “Indeed, you charge a hefty fee. Therefore you won’t mind if I check the merchandise.”

Shots rang out. One of Largo’s men called, “Customs, hundreds of them!”

Amagons and Terra Nostra scattered. Jenna took Tarvin by the hand. “This way, I know a cave.”

+

Jenna surveyed the valley below, crawling with customs agents. “They’ll confiscate your shipment.”

“So clever of you to insist on full payment up front.” Tarvin surveyed the small cave. “A convenient bolt hole, but not well supplied, only one blanket. Either we share, or one of us freezes. I could always sell you, to make up for the losses on this trip.”

Jenna replied, “I could always turn you in for the reward.”

Tarvin smirked. “My ship is well hidden on the south side of the mountain. We left your ship on the north side of the mountain. Is it safe?”

“Since you are the only one who knows where my ship is, yes, it is safe.”

Tarvin frowned. “Is that why you brought me up here, to keep your ship safe, not because you like me? So, do we share the blanket, or does one of us sell the other?”

Morning came. The valley was empty. Tarvin kissed her. “Until next time, Jenna, when I will probably sell you.”

Jenna returned the kiss. “Until next time, Tarvin, when I shall probably claim the price on your head.”

+

“Report, captain.”

The customs officer saluted his commander. "The ring leaders got away, sir. We couldn't hold them anyway. You see, there were dummy guns in all five hundred crates."

+

Chevner hailed Jenna. “Where have you been?”

Jenna replied, “I only had time to send one message, and I had to throw a little surprise party for the supplier. Here’s your shipment, five hundred carbines.”

Chenver’s eyes widened. “This will make Avalon’s day. Five hundred rifles, and you don’t even want payment?”

Jenna shrugged. “I was paid in advance.”

Excellent, Brad! Very much in character for Jenna, and great continuity with Largo, Avalon etc.

Yay for Jenna fic! Both are very believable, I can see her using Tarvin to escape family expectations but also outgrowing him as she became more sure of herself.

Nice story Brad. Have you ever written how Jenna became a pirate? I'd love to read your version of her back story. Alpha elite to pirate is such a strange journey. I must re read your excellent essay on her.

Free Trader!

I have never outlined the story, but I'm sure if I did, it would have something to do with a doting mother, an overly strict and cold father, and a dashing rogue whom a very young Jenna found to be way more fun and exciting than the stuffy narcissistic Alphas her father kept introducing her to.

Brad...Free Trader...sorry Jenna! I see Federation Alpha Elite relationships more like Trump's relationships with women - misogynistic. Though your's makes more sense perhaps given Jenna's self reliance and confidence.

Vila: Jenna Stannis... she's a big name, it's an honor to be locked up with her.

Ser Davos: I'm not a pirate, I'm a smuggler. If you are a famous smuggler, you're not doing it right.

JustBrad, this was great! I also really like how you'd outline her backstory too.

Oh WOW!
Thank you Annie for showing us your take on Jenna's history!
I can believe it happened. (aw, you summed up such a nasty bunch of suitors, yuck)

And Brad, of course, you are the Jenna specialist!
Brilliant interaction of the assertive Jenna with Tarvin!
And as others already mentioned, in great continuity with Avalon's actions and other.

Thank you both for your contributions to my drawing! Grin

Well, here goes.
I thought I ought to put something up before time runs out!!!! (Where is this year going to?)

A Good Man

“Impressive,” Tarvin smiled.
“I’m glad you approve,” Jenna smiled back.
On the ground at her feet lay one of the three hundred Custom Guards who had been sent to capture her associate. The unfortunate would –be- attacker had been felled by one of Jenna’s deft self defence moves and he was now unconscious.
“Perhaps you should kill him; just to make sure he doesn’t alert any of his colleagues,” Tarvin suggested, mindful of Jenna’s abilities. Those memories still hurt.
“I didn’t come here to kill, Tarvin, I came to collect my fee.”
“Of course, but not here. We need to reach the rendezvous point up there and wait for my men; they have the fee.”
“Of course they do,” Jenna mused, “You still don’t trust me, do you?”
“As much as you trust me; which is why you arrived early…shall we go?”

This part of Zolat Four was mountainous and as Jenna and Tarvin ascended the steep path, the night began to draw in making their progress quite hazardous.
“You really do believe in making things difficult don’t you?” Jenna murmured, ignoring her climbing companion’s steadying hand.
“Not difficult, just awkward for anyone who should try to surprise me. Not far now. Then we wait…”

The cave wasn’t as she had imagined.
It had all the comforts of home…for an Amagon anyway, but at least it was dry and warm.
“There,” Tarvin announced, triumphantly lighting a candle, “Now we only have to wait and soon my men will arrive with that fee.”
“But first they have to overcome those guards.”
“They will.”
“You have such faith in them, don’t you?”
Tarvin smiled. “I didn’t thank you for saving my life back there.”
“Perhaps your mind was elsewhere.”
“Can you blame it, Jenna? You are a beautiful woman who deserves better than running contraband to the so many undesirables of this Galaxy.”
“I enjoy my freedom and independence.”
“But I could give you so much.”
“I’m sure you could.”
“But still you spurn me. Do I have a rival for your affections?”
“No. I’ve yet to find someone worthy of me.”
“This someone…how will you know if he is worthy of you?”
“He will be an honest man, for one thing…”
“And rich? Like me?”
“I would hardly call you rich.”
“But I am a Prince among my people…”
“A Prince who hides in a cave waiting to be rescued.”
“That will change soon, but you could be by my side…”
“Once I have my fee, I may consider your offer.”
“I have another offer…”
“And this man will not be so forward with his attentions.”
Tarvin sat down beside her, his hand gently tracing the outline of her face, “Then he will be a fool….”

The noise awoke her with a start.
The image of the cave and Tarvin dissolved and she remembered where she was now.
In the branches of a tree, huddled against the cold waiting for daylight and a fight for survival.
She looked at the man who sat next to her.
There were no customs guards and no hope of rescue from any of this man’s colleagues, but yet it occurred to her that some dreams were worth having.
Perhaps she trusted him and felt safe with him.
