Servalan
Lurena
How good did she think she knew Avon?
Any thoughts?

For example, I think she was mistaken about his greed:

Servalan sadistic? Not sure. She was brutal when she killed Argus. He relationship with Avon had a Sado-masochistic vibe. The red nails imply a pleasure in giving pain. Yet she doesn't like the sadists in Moloch or torture Egrorian sadistically when he failed. I could write her as politician or sadist. Though telling Cally about the truth of the 'hospital ship' was pretty horrible - even sadistic!

Servalan failing to understand Avon - absolutely. He didn't seem to me to desire power over others just the means to ensure he could live his own life, untroubled. Never really worked out definitively why he kept kissing her, though I suspect that the third part of the Lucifer trilogy may attempt to explain it.
Just because I can't sing doesn't mean I won't.

I think she understood his avarice well, but she misunderstood his motivation. Avon didn't want to be rich and powerful so he could be a lord over others. Avon wanted to be rich and powerful so he could be left alone.

Exactly my thought Brad!

From my recollection, either having read or possibly heard at one of the conventions back in the day, when it came to THAT scene in Aftermath, Uncle Vere was a bit concerned as to how to film it...bearing in mind that this waa going out at 7.15pm and young children would still be watching (he called us boys and girls at Teal Vandor, bless him) so he asked Mr D and Miss P if they would happy with filming a clinch, or he could pan down....needless to say, both actors decided to go with what we saw on the TV (It certainly knocked my socks off! Up until then we had had the lawyers having a quick kiss and Blake with Inga (his cousin) and Avon holding Meegat's hand..but what happened during the 4 hours it took the LIbby to get back..and why didn't Meegat believe him to be a god any more????).
Anyway.....the scene in Deathwatch between Avon and Servie was likewise decided upon by both actors...
So the sudden interest in Avon by Servie was decided upon in Series C (or 3), but it will be interesting to see if Mr D explains it all in the third part of Lucifer.
And you know, Lurena, I just adore that shirt that he is wearing in Aftermath..I spent a few good minutes staring at it at work this afternoon....deep sigh...

I loved the shirt too, Little Sue, but I also loved the clinch and realised what a great kisser Avon was. Many a happy time spent contemplating that! I understood that kiss because of his ultimate rejection but the kiss in Deathwatch is more tricky. I mean why does Servalan permit it after the Aftermath humiliation, or at least return the humiliation in kind - especially as Avon has outwitted her for once.

I also neglected to mention that very first kiss in Aftermath...between Dayna and Avon. Hello, I thought,...how on earth did a young slip of girl manage to drag a semi conscious chap into that cave??? She must have had her Weetabix that morning...anyway, I digress.
That clinch in Deathwatch was unscripted. But I assume that after much debate between the actors, scriptwriter, director...
According to the book, Liberation, much of whose views I don't actually agree with, '....we could have 2 possible interpretations;1, that by employing her own techniques of sexual harassment against her, he is making her aware that he is wise to her tactics. 2 is that he is suggesting that he coud still be open to offers of future friendship, in order to decieve her as to his intentions.
Servalan seems to be using the idea of a relationship between them as a tactical manoeuvre to contain Avon; her triumphant smile at the end of the scene suggests that she interprets the kiss as a sign that she is succeeding (which does not rule out the fact that she may also have enjoyed it)...'

Personally, I just love the way Miss P turns to the camera with a very wicked smile on her face and says, 'After all, it's only a minor violation.'

Maybe it was that rejection in Aftermath that spurred her on. In Rumours, the way she caressed his neck with that gun still sends shivers down my spine!!!

And the moment of brilliance.... when Jacqueline subtly wipes the lipstick from Paul's lips while he's talking to Jan on the communicator.
It's a classic Film Noir 'Other Woman' move.

Slightly OT but was Servalan's full name ever revealed in any other media? Or is it like Penny in "The BIg Bang Theory" with her last name never revealed? Is Servalan a first or last name anyway?

I don't believe any mention was given to Servalan's full name. I had always assumed that Servalan was her family name, not her first name, the same with Blake and Avon being their character's surnames.

It has to be her family name because she is called by the Servalan name by officials and military personnel in formal settings; even if they were familiar enough with her to use her personal name in private, which I doubt is the case with any of the characters we see, it would not be used publically or while 'on duty' in relation to her capacity as a high ranking official or politician.

edit: duplicate thread on Servalan's name removed - SD

Reversing the polarity of the neutron flow. I bet that means something. It sounds great.

I can't remember which, but there was a fanfic in the 90's (or older) that gave Servalan the name "Renata" which is rather brilliant, as it means reborn, presumably as Sleer.

Magic Toenail
It is probably a last name, although there is always the possibility that she has an embarrasing name like Endeavor Morse, or an unpronounoucable one like Ford Prefect's or Steve Martin in "The Man With Two Brains" Dr. Michael Hfuhruhhurr.

Probably not though, within the context of naming conventions within the Blake's 7 universe.

As she is referred to by rank and the Servalan name it hard to argue that it is anything other than her familey or formal name. I think that she is also referred to as Servalan by people when she is not present, again supporting the idea of it being a formal type of address.
