Too much is made of Vila's drinking. In fact, his drinking really only gets out of control in the final series.

Agreed. The lowest point is probably Avon having to bribe him with half a glass of wine in order to get him to clean out the ballast tank in Animals.

Next to Tarrant, Vila probably suffers the worst from inconsistent writing.

All writers see him as comic relief, and a tad lazy. Some only see him as a foil and fool, while others see him as a complex character who can be quite clever and dangerous if the need arises.

Terry Nation seemed to hold the latter view, giving Vila a bit of a dark side to go with his caution.

To begin with, certainly - but rewatching Countdown I was cross that Vila had been written as being stupid and annoying in that ep. Terry's revenge for not being allowed to kill him off? He seems to have fallen out of love with the character by that point.

Terry did try to get rid of Vila again in Star One along with Jenna (but failed, thankfully).

There was really only one instance of him being stupid as I recall and I'd have said it was necessary for some aspects of the plot to work. Not the way I like writers to make plots work but it was a long way from being the worst instance in the series overall

I was reading this page with details of Romainian Myths, Heroes and Monsters: http://www.theinc...nd-heroes/

The last part, about the hero Făt-Frumos, tells how the young prince makes an oath to scour the world for the secret of immortality, or die trying. Remind you of anyone?

The worst contender for Vila being stupid is Ultraworld, where the resolution to the story relies on Vila being a complete and utter moron.

I thought the Vila character was very important in context with Avon. The banter between them was often humorous in a way people can relate to.

His character was not that of a leader having to be coaxed to do things although some were the more dirty jobs.

Vila was often left in control of the teleporter controls and due to either fatigue or alcohol would be unreliable in terms of promptly getting the others back.

There were odd episodes where Vila was the lead character like in City at the Edge of the World yet normally he would not take the lead or engage in fighting the federation troops.

He seemed the most easy going of the group and the most likely to go off with anyone offering a good time.

His unique skill set was very important to the group in terms of opening doors or locks and also at times fascinating in terms of technology, reminds me of some of the things I am reading on local FB as people are using key fob carrier codes to break into cars.
