Episodes of the Champions often refered to WW2 and that was in the late 60's

Terry Nation always referred to WW2. The most blatant example is The Dalek Invasion Of Earth, which even has the Daleks doing a scripted salute at one point.

Talk about avoidance! In the 1950s, any references to Germany's past in foreign films were removed. In the first dubbed version of Notorious, there were no Nazis smuggling radioctive material, but drug runners. Only decades later, they re-dubbed the movie so that the German public could finally see what it was really about.
