The Jotastar /Blue Box Toy Spaceships
As more information has (finally) come to light on these toys, I thought I'd share what will be the revised entry in the second edition of the Merchandise Guide which won't be published until there are sufficient changes to make it value for money.

TYG-002 Blake’s 7 Cosmic Strikeforce

Manufacturer: Jotastar (c. 1978)

In the first edition of this book, there was a Federation Interceptor listed and a separate entry for three ‘Plastic Spaceships.’ In fact, all four were marketed as ‘Cosmic Strikeforce’ with the individual titles of Eagle, Hawk, Falcon and Kestrel. Each was driven by a friction motor and sold in a blister pack.
The Hawk design is the model that was incorrectly labelled as a Federation Interceptor. While the Eagle’s circular design had not appeared on screen at the time of its manufacture, it does bear a striking resemblance to the Gauda Prime ships that shot down the Scorpio in the season 4 episode ‘Blake’. This is almost certainly a coincidence.

Little visual material was made available to any manufacturer, including Jotastar, to the dismay of the licensees. The long lead in time required by the manufacturers was not properly accounted for which is presumably why Jotastar used generic ship designs in this licensed range. The only connection to Blake’s 7 was the original series logo printed on the packaging and stickers of the logo affixed to each toy.

These designs had been in circulation since at least 1970. For example, they were included in the Imperial Toy Corporation’s line of ‘authentic mechanical replicas’ which were sold as the ‘Apollo Moon Exploring Series.’ As with Blake’s 7, the toys were in no way an accurate representation of any Apollo craft.
It is likely that these designs were created by the company Blue Box Toys (as the company’s name is moulded into the underside of each toy) and then licensed to other toy manufacturers such as Jotastar and the Imperial Toy Company. Blue Box Toys also sold the ships themselves as ‘Space Vehicles’ in various bright colours in the seventies, obviously without any Blake’s 7 markings.

The licensed Blake’s 7 versions of these toys are extremely hard to find, particularly in their original packaging, but are less marketable than they would otherwise would be as the models were never seen in the series.

I have the cosmic strike force eagle without packet.

If anyone is interested I'd consider selling it to raise funds for the Blake event next year.

It's in acceptable condition and still has the Blakes 7 logo. Photos can be provided if anyone would like to take a look.

For the record most fans will look at these and declare: "Is that even a Blakes 7 spaceship?"

My take on this unique line is that there Invasion fleet spaceship kids toys.

Looks like 'The Kestral' is a rarity. (The Kestral reminds me of 'Rocky Jones Space Ranger'Wink.
