Rewatch - A1 The Way Back
Scott
'You've done a brilliant job!!!' shouts Blake.

And I must say the writers did a brilliant job in painting the Federation as corrupt, dirty and in all ways reprehensible. It does a fantastic job of allowing viewers to get behind Blake's crusade despite his flaws and those of his crew.

How messed up must Blake be at this point, two lives flowing into one as his memory returns, and then in a very short time he see's a terrible massacre, is arrested and then accused of child molestation!

Head must almost be spinning off!

Hardly a wonder that he goes off the rails a bit in Season 2. If only VftP was a better ep, it could have been a great follow up to this.

It's so subtle and well done. Raises glass to Mr. Thomas.

This is extraordinarily adult for 6pm on January 2nd, with all thee kids off school and watching it!!

I think here lies the basis of the Dutch TV's cancellation of Blake's 7; it said the series was not suitable for children. But we had 2 seasons aired though.

Dudley Simpson music works so well at setting the scenes.

These 'balls' I think are a great idea. Clever way of having a courtroom scene but getting to the point so the story can move on

I love the way Gareth builds the Blake character.
He uses everyone's emotion to get there, not only his own. High class!

Yes, this episode is essential in showing what Blake is fighting against.

If it wasn't for The Way Back, Blake would come across as a bit of a git.

There is also progression in the following six or seven episodes. Blake gradually changes from innocent citizen to determined/fanatic freedom fighter. In the following episodes, we already see Blake lying to his crew, but he also exhibits signs of insecurity (like chewing this thumb). This gradual change is a really brilliant piece of acting.

I still think this episode works better as a flashback (Space Fall or even Cygnus Alpha would have been better starters with this episode taking place after Seek-Locate-Destroy, but that's just me) - still, though, it's nice to see how it all began... although with a slightly more solemn tone as everyone's favourite rebel leader is no longer with us.

Vila's opening performance is also great.
