Random Rewatch - D2 Power
trevor travis
The episode: Derek Two - Power
The date: Tuesday, March 15th, 2016
The time: 7.45pm UK time

Random Rewatch - No 11

Selected by Trevor Travis

In which Avon is knocked out, we bump into the local Rent-A-Tribe on Xenon base led by the delightful Gunn Sar, Avon is knocked out, Orac is even less helpful than usual, Vila worries about living on nuts and berries, Gunn Sar dies (sob!!), Pella turns out to be evil (boo!!!) but she dies (hooray!!), and... oh yes... Avon is knocked out. No wonder he ended up with brain damage.

Now then, can I hear the sound of a shower in the background? Grin

When it comes down to war 'twixt the sexes,
Know that Seskas are better with hexes.
Their mental attacks take Avon aback,
While Gun Sar just flexes his Pecs-es.

Sue, you might not be able to, but I'm sure I can. Wink

If there ever was a B7 remake I feel Power is one of the episodes that would be omitted, due to it's dated, un pc sexism (though I know some of you disagree about this). However it could possibly just work if the writer reversed the gender roles with the all female Seska coming out on top in the "Battle of the Sexes". A victory for girl power you might say!

"Power" isn't sexist at all. It has a clear anti-sexism message. It subverts gender roles, as Gunn Sar turns out to be all bluster and a big softie, who deeply loves his wife and is a dab hand with needle & thread. And Nina ends the episode apparently in charge of the Hommiks.

The idea of the Seska winning is a cliché, and I'm glad it didn't happen. And why would anyone want Pella to win? She's a nasty piece of work, who murders her best friend.

Maybe Pella could be rewritten as a more sympathetic character - ruthless and determined rather than cruel - more Avonesque you might say. Indeed, if I had the necessary imagination I'd go away and write it for you now.
Actually maybe the reason Ben Steed had Pella kill Kate might be more to do with tidying things up so we end up with the requisite seven crew members for the rest of the season rather than to make Pella appear a psychotic character?

Ah, yes! Like the following:

AVON: You see, Pella, it's your strength, and however you use it, a man's will always be greater. Unfair, perhaps, but biologically unavoidable.

Pfft

I can't find it now, but the other day on one of the many Mustardland (The Archers fan forum) dealing with the unfolding story of domestic abuse, there were several posts about comparing the relative physical strengths of men and women - based on the comparative musculature, size of bones, muscles, grip etc. And the fact is that men on the whole ARE physically stronger. Of course there are exceptions - female bodybuilders -v- 10 stone weaklings; women tend to be more resilient when it comes to fighting off infections; and all other things being equal, women tend to outlive men. 'Stronger' in either gender does not mean 'superior'. To misquote Orac: "A statement of fact cannot be sexist."

That's true. But statistical difference expressed as an absolute statement can be.

Well, I'd tell Avon that, but he may shoot me with his superior strength...
