Artwork Fan Fic Challenge - Jan/Feb 2016

The above picture of Avon, Grant and Anna was created by Atomicmayo, by request of BradPaula, and is already starting to inspire stories by some of our writers.

This thread is for posting ficlets inspired by the picture. It will remain open until the end of February. Usual rules apply - stories must comply with Horizon's PG-13 policy, and please try to keep them to a manageable length. Shorter entries are essential for inclusion in the challenge compilations; longer entries will be considered as separate fanfics and will join a waiting list to appear in the Fan Fic section of the website.

Have fun!

A sentimental little Valentine's tale inspired by the above art work.

The dream, though familiar, still had the power to disturb. An urgent need to get to the light without looking back clashed crazily with his inability to move; the exhausted sense of expending huge amounts of energy with little result drenching him with sweat. Behind him, brother and sister were caught helpless in the briars that bloomed ferociously and twisted green stems around their wrists and ankles, petals perfuming the air even as thorns lacerated flesh. Their cries reached out to him, the man cursing, accusing him of indifference, the woman pleading for him to return and save her.

And he wanted to. Oh he wanted to. But he knew that if he turned round, however brief his glance, that he would condemn them to that thicket of cruel roses forever. His only hope was to move forward out of the darkness but his strength was failing, his knees trembling, buckling.

And now, worse than the cries, there were voices, childlike, crystal clear, mocking his hopes for a natural, loving relationship between a lad and his lass: mocking the sweet and simple valentine's promise that he, like other lovers before him, had made.

Piercingly the voices sang:

Red roses: the sign
I am yours, you are mine
Forever together, my dear
Valentine.

Hauntingly, the voices remembered:

Rose red as blood
Sharper than knife,
You loved me my darling
And laid down your life.

Pitilessly, they reminded:

My kisses proved deadly
As serpents' cold breath,
My love for you, dearest,
Brought only your death.

Bitterly, they concluded:

Roses I gave,
But you'll never be mine.
Lost to me ever
My sad valentine.

He woke abruptly with a dry mouth and a pounding heart and a longing that he knew would never now be satisfied.
Just because I can't sing doesn't mean I won't.

Very convincing creepy dream imagery. Until I read your story, I hadn't noticed the vines in the background of the picture (shows how observant I am these days).

atomicmayo
Woaaaah I love the turn into the surreal your fic took, Annie. And what a cool bit of serendipity - in thumbnail sketches I was doing for that I had the vines wrapping around them...!

Art inspiring art! Brilliant.

Great picture atomicmayo coupled with some intense imagery from Anniew.

I love it when B7 fan-creativity cross pollinates.

And now my little effort, with thanks to Travisina and Lurena who both kindly trawled through my original 'scribble'.

Game Changer

Avon stood quite still.
In this dark, noisy, fetid place.
“Why, Grant? Why bring us here?”
“Because we are less likely to encounter any surveillance,” Grant replied, quickly looking over his shoulder.
“Surveillance? Why?”
“Because I’m leaving soon. I’m getting out while I still can.”
“Leaving?” This time it was his sister, Anna, who spoke.
“Yes, I don’t want you two involved.”
“And you trust me?” Avon asked flatly.
“Oh, I do,” Grant replied. He ventured another look round the foliage covered pillar, “Goodness knows why. But beggars can’t be choosers. I trust you to look after my sister. I need to know that there will be someone to protect her from all the flak.”
“What flak?” Anna demanded to know.
“When he starts on his new career I suspect,” Avon smiled, “You really intend to go through with it, don’t you?
“What career?”
“It’s better that you don’t know, Anna,” Grant said, finally giving them both his attention, “but I have certain skills that can be very rewarding, especially out there beyond Federation controlled space.”
“Out there, as you quaintly put it, “Avon began, “is not like this sanitised simulation of all-out war that you’ve dragged me into. For instance, these…” he waved his gun in Grant’s face, “actually kill out there. Not pretend; but really kill.”
“And how would you know about guns? You’ve never held one, let alone fired it.”
That was true. A computer programme was Avon’s forte; any programme could be overridden or altered. It just took time and talent, the latter of which he had in abundance.
“There may come a time, Grant, and you have been an expert tutor.”
“Thank you, Avon, but it still needs a certain nerve to pull the trigger. Let us just hope that when that time does come, your nerve holds.”
“It will.”
Grant turned again, to pull the tendrils on the pillar apart and look out into the dark, which was occasionally illuminated by two bright search lights.
“Why so jumpy?” Avon asked.
“As I said before…”
“Surveillance. So you said. But we all are being watched in this dome; you know that.”
“I know, but, somehow this is different. I suspect that even you are being watched.”
“Why would they watch me?”
“Because of what you are; a computer genius.”
“I hardly think I qualify as a genius.”
Grant smiled, “Maybe so. I’ll wait for those searchlights to go out and then I’ll leave you two lovebirds to your own devices. At least give me time to get on the shuttle I have waiting. You don’t mind staying inside this game for a while do you?”
“Del, you’re not serious about this are you?” Anna implored.
“Never more so…one last thing, Avon, if anything happens to Anna, I shall come looking for you.”
“Is that a threat?”
“Oh no, my friend, that’s a promise.”
Avon was shocked by that, but before he could reply, Del Grant had vanished into the ominous darkness.
“Avon, stop him,” Anna cried.
“Too late…he’s gone.”
“We have to go after him!”
“You heard him; he needs time to get away. Men like that; like your brother, they relish the challenge.”
“And what do you relish?” Anna whispered, her arms snaking round Avon’s neck.
“Well now; that all depends.”
“Still so secretive…”
“Quite. Now, the question is, when and how do we escape your brother’s idea of a distraction.”
“We should go after him.”
“No, that would not be wise, besides, I have my own plan.”
Anna looked at him, “Is it to do with those Visas?”
“I only have to give the word and we are free, Anna.”
“When?”
“Soon.”
“But first we have to get out of my brother’s idea of fun.”
“And how do you plan to do that?” Avon asked the temptress smiling at him.
“I’m going to shoot you...”
“Shoot me?”
“Hmm. Then you will shoot me. It will look like a lovers’ pact, and that way the game, for you and me, is finished. We can both legitimately leave; honour intact.”
“I see. Won’t being at such close range be…uncomfortable?”
“Momentarily. But once the ‘hit’ is registered…then we walk out of here.”
“And I thought that your brother was one for theatrics.”
Anna reached down to her gun belt and brought the weapon up, gently tracing the outline of his face with its barrel, “So, do you have the nerve to shoot me?”
“Oh, I have the nerve.”
“That’s very worrying…”
“What is?”
“That you didn’t hesitate to answer my question. You do trust me, don’t you Avon?”
He thought for a moment. She was beguiling. Even dressed for combat in an unflattering outfit, she exuded a mesmerising fascination.
“Yes…I’m afraid I do.”
“Then it’s agreed. On the count of three…”
Avon felt the barrel of her gun hard in his side.
She stepped back, “One…”
He raised his own gun. It felt unreal in his hand, but he aimed it, just the same.
He smiled, “Two…”
She returned the smile, “…Three!”

That's a nice bit of foreshadowing Sue. Really liked your interpretation of the space Atomicmayo drew and your characterisation. Really nails Avon/Anna's relationship.

Plus ça change

The architecture of the tracking gallery was strange to say the least. Glaring light rained down from a system of transparent tubes criss-crossing the ceiling and tried in vain to illuminate the vast room. Pillars and partitions, overcrowded with vines, were scattered about the room, casting more shadows than the lights could devour. From the very moment they entered the building, Avon was alert. The whole environment spelled T.R.A.P. He should have known better than to follow a trail to a planet with an ominous name like Gorgon Prime.

Anna and Del followed him as vigilant as he was himself, their weapons drawn, their eyes darting warily into every direction. Avon had the premonition that their watchfulness was futile. A whole army could hide behind these pillars and partitions.

Of course he was right. One moment they seemed to be alone in the tracking gallery, and in the next moment, they were surrounded by an army of Federation troopers. Trap.

Slowly they lowered their weapons. Trying to shoot their way out would have been a pointless gesture. The only chance they had - if they had a chance at all! - was to play for time.

And then another figure emerged from behind the pillars - not another trooper in a black combat suit, but a woman wearing a white dress too pristine to be true.

‘Servalan!’

Avon did not sound surprised. Only she could have been the mastermind behind this trap.

‘Well met, Avon’, she smiled, ‘for the last time, I’m afraid.’

Her threat did not surprise Avon either. What surprised him, though, was her nod towards Anna.

‘Thank you, agent Bartolomew. I knew I could rely on you in the end.’

It had been a bad year. Avon had already suffered too many losses. His trust had been shattered too often. Normally he would just have chuckled at Servalan’s remark and answered, ‘Nice try!’ But there had been hints that Anna was not who she said she was. Slowly he turned towards her. She could not believe the doubtful look in his eyes.

‘I ceased to be agent Bartolomew a long time ago’, she tried to explain, ‘with you, I was always Anna Grant.’

He did not listen. ‘Is it true?’ he asked, ‘have you betrayed us? Have you betrayed me?’

‘You don’t understand’, she tried to explain.

When she realised what he was about to do, she raised her gun.

Del Grant watched in horror as Avon shot his sister. He, too, raised his gun, unsure what to do. It was this inconclusiveness that led to his demise. The troopers did not know if he wanted to fire at Avon or at them but they did not hesitate.

When the troopers closed in, Avon seemed to awake. He stared at Anna’s body, knowing that he had just made the biggest mistake of his life. In a symbolic gesture, he straddled her body. Then he slowly raised his gun, aiming at the advancing troopers.

He wondered what could have been if he had made different decisions. What if he had not killed the man who sold the tickets just because he suspected him of foul play? Maybe Anna, Del and he would not have been forced to leave Earth in such a hurry. Or what if he had joined this Blake guy? Maybe everything would have turned out well.

Compelling, ironic story Hugbot. Avon destined always to kill those he loves. I think that's part of the character's fascination - you hope he's going to escape his fate while fearing he can't!

Oh Hugbot...so good.
I've often what would have happend if Hubby and I had been successful in buying our very first house.
We were gazumped at the very last moment; so we didn't get the lovely big house that needed doing up and we had to run around for another...and we found it..and gazumped the couple who were after that house. (I know it is a terrible thing, but I have decided never, ever to get gazumped again.)
Would we have ended up in this lovely detached house that we now call home?
I think we would have, because it was Hubby's change of job that made us move around.
So your story, as an alternative, could be so true.

Because February is almost over and I have been procrastinating, I wanted to read the newer ones and get a comment in before the thread was locked!

Sue - I really liked how you equally focused on all the characters in the dynamic. I really liked what you did with all three of them there! Grin

Hugbot - Aaaah the mash-up of the events of the final ep and with Anna and OH MAN. Angsty! That was wonderful!

And... at the risk of sounding cheesy, it was always a huge goal of mine for people to write stories based on my illustrations. I have been drawing in fits and starts for years when my self-esteem has let me, and to see so much inspiration generated by my little old scribblies is easily one of the most fulfilling things I've experienced as an artist so far. Thank you all so much for contributing! <3

Huge thanks to atomicmayo, for providing the inspiring picture - and to our writers who rose so brilliantly to the challenge. Sorry I didn't get a chance to contribute one myself, but between February's word prompts and the Valentine thread (not to mention RL work), wasn't able to fit one in.

This thread will be locked tonight or tomorrow morning, but look out for a brand new Artwork Fan Fic Challenge for March!

I'll have to put me thinking head on by the looks of it tomorrow. I just hope inspiration comes quickly, 'cos time is flying by!

Lurena and I are just tweaking a story that involves those cute animals...plus another one in the pipeline...and then I'm off on holiday at the end of the month, and still RL gets in the way!!!! Boo HIssAngry
