January 2016 fanfic challenge
winnie-l
What R4 programme was it on - is there a podcast?
I could be wrong (understandable when you know what time it was on) but think it was Prayer for the Day...
Yes, I'm right, here's the text of it:
http://www.bbc.co...s/b06wv714
At 05:43 this morning!

Travisina
Blimey, winnie - I thought I was an early riser, but even I'm not awake and tuned in at 5.43am!

Thanks for the link, it was nice to listen to - and what a lovely accent Pádraig Ó Tuama has.

Finally managed to summon up some inspiration. I didn't expect to find Vila the easiest character to write for, but I'm not going to argue with it.

Vila fidgeted in his seat as the teacher explained again the importance of the grading exam. Students who performed well could increase their grade, perhaps even achieving the coveted “Alpha” status. Finally the computerized voice intoned +Begin+ and the first question appeared on his screen. Hmm, not that difficult. Vila quickly keyed in his answer. The computer flashed +Correct+ and the next question appeared. Again, not a difficult one; maybe he could actually earn an increased grade. But as he continued to answer the questions, doubts began to creep in. Higher grades got more privileges and better jobs, but also more security screening. He would have a hard time explaining those lock picks to Federation security, not to mention the time he was out of the apartment using them. He had the skills to earn a comfortable living on his own terms instead of being trapped in a boring office job. Was a higher grade really worth the complications that would come with it? After a long pause, he entered a deliberately incorrect answer. For all the remaining questions, he simply made up a random answer. At the end of the exam, his grade flashed on the screen. +DELTA+ He smiled in satisfaction. No need to become an Alpha, so much easier to use his skills to relieve them of some of their surplus wealth.

Ellen, that's great!

A neat little story, that perfectly captures the sort of thing Vila would do. Smile

Great story Ellen Grin
"If you didn't want the answer, you shouldn't have asked the question."

Lurena
Ellen that is a good one! You wrote Vila very well.
It is nice as it gives me another view on the caste system; I had been of opinion that the people in B7 were born Alpha, Delta, and so on.
(oops, should we (re-)start a thread about that?)

@ Sue/Lurena: Lovely visuals in your Sound of Silence story! Also liked which characters came to the rescue!

@Ellen: Terrific Vila story! Grin

Lurena once again came up trumps with the idea!

Alpha 7/5

Zen had called it an Alpha 7/5 of the Genus Korda
Avon had called it a cactus.
A somewhat derogatory term as this was so much more than that; and Cally knew it.
It was a Moon Disc.
And it was lonely.
Even though she had ‘spoken’ to it at every opportunity; still it pined.
On at least one occasion it had mysteriously found its way deep inside the Liberator’s main frame computer.
And that had angered Avon.
When he had pointed out that there was no way this ‘being’ could make its own way there, his remarks had been met with a derisory, ‘How do you know?’ from Vila.
“I see,” Avon retorted, “And you do know, I take it?”
“Nothing of the sort. All I do know is that this Moon Disc is able to do things that even you can’t understand.”
And so it had continued; the small, lonely Moon Disc would disappear from Cally’s cabin only to be discovered nestled within the circuits of Zen’s master controls.
Not even Orac seemed to be immune...which irritated the tetchy computer even more.
....and then Avon had discovered the reason.
No-one queried why he had stationed himself outside Cally’s cabin; but it was well that he did. For he saw for himself exactly how the lowly creature was finding its way throughout the ship; Cally herself was aiding its apparent ease of movement; except that she was totally unware of her collusion.
“It must be Telekinesis,” she said.
“In that case, this object needs to be confined for its own good and the safety of this ship. Don’t you agree, Blake?” Avon had declared most bluntly.
Blake had reluctantly concurred.
And so the Moon Disc was consigned to one of the Liberator’s strong rooms…
…until the stranger opened that room and showed his discovery to his superior.
“Leave it,” Section leader Klegg demanded, “Just keep looking for Blake’s people.”
And the Moon Disc found itself alone again, until it felt the pain; the pain of Cally losing her people; her planet; the Children of Auron.
It was a pain that the moon disc felt keenly and yet that gave it strength to help Cally as later, the strange entity attempted to take her body; her life force. It helped Cally fight back. But at what cost?
Dayna found it.
Dull and unmoving.
“What is it?” she asked, cradling it in her hands.
“A nuisance,” replied Avon.
Cally took it, “It needs our help. It’s dying…”
Tarrant had listened as Cally explained how the creature had come to be aboard the Liberator.
“It can’t go home to Zondar,” the pilot said.
“It needs company,” Cally whispered, “With minds that can communicate with it.”
Vila perked up. “I know exactly where we can take it!”

Kaarn, the new home for the Children of Auron.
Franton and Pater took the Moon Disc.
“We will look after it,” Franton smiled, “And in time the children will allow it to thrive.”
Cally held it for the last time.
“Good bye and thank you,” she whispered.

Alpha 7/5
I planned to create an illustration about Cally walking the Moon Disc and Avon watching .
But I have work committments that are in the way and I 'm afraid the January thread will be locked before I have completed that drawing.
I like to give it a try though.
Can I still add an illustration once the thread is closed Travisina?

Send me a PM when it's ready, and I'll briefly re-open the thread for you to drop it in.

Alternatively, if you send me the illustration, I'll keep it on file and add it to the story when I assemble the monthly collection in the fan fiction section.

Well...there aren't very many happy endings in B7. So we thought we'd redress the balance.

It actually is still a somewhat bitter-sweet ending. Cally loses a mindlike friend and the Moon Disc will never see its "family" again.
Both Cally and the Moon Disc will be alone again in their own specific way.

Thank you for your comment Anniew!

ALPHA

The first of a series, the beginning. The brightest star in a constellation. The first in order of importance. And of course, a highly privileged group in the B7 universe.

So let's start with something out of the left field: audio

Okay, given it's an audio challenge here is the response:

Badly Made B7 presents... PROJECT ALPHA

What is the Federation's top secret Project Alpha? Why has all communication from the planet Egdirrop ceased? Why is it now being referred to as "the poor Roj planet"? Is it all part of a plan to lure Roj Blake into a Federation trap? The Liberator crew decide to investigate.

Knocked out in about five minutes at the start of the month with no equipment, no budget, no script, no plot, no logic and no redeeming features whatever, this has been languishing on my computer waiting for me to get back to it and is now uploaded in desperation as the calendar races towards February.

Click on the bold blue text above to be whisked away on random teleport coordinates. And remember, as Malcolm McLaren said: "You don't just have four musicians who can't play; you've got four actors who can't act!"*

Joe...absolutely...well I'm blown away ...so good...so funny. Eat as you've never eaten before! And I like most the fact that you did it with your lovely kids. It had special resonance because I'm a Granny about to get up and cook grandkids porridge but with honey not salt. ( try keeping that in your shoe Avon) If you could bottle your daughters laugh you'd make your fortune. Keep making Badly Made Blakes 7 please. And with out takes!

I have just listened while eating my breakfast (porridge, today with added grapes & lychees) - and laughed so much I nearly subjected my keyboard to the same fate as the Liberator crew.

JD, that's superb! Your kids sound gorgeous - more audios, please!
