Speaking of Sherlock Holmes, could this top-hatted gentleman be the world's foremost consulting detective?

Why, no! It's Paul Darrow as Robert Yorke in the first episode of "Penmarric" (BBC, 1979).

The episode is a mini-masterclass in PD's two finger acting style.*

(*) You know, that two-fingered pointing gesture he makes. I didn't mean he was flicking V-signs 'round the place.**

(**) Anyone remember the illo "Avyvyon"?

Credits: Stuntman: Gareth Milne (but don't ask me to say what role he played)
+CONFIRMED+, he was in B7! 27.Aftermath, 3rd Sarran Horseman
Probably shot by Dayna - poor guy! All in the life of a B7 stuntman...

I notice his name appeared as 'Stunt Co-ordinator' in BBC's 'Sherlock', 'A Scandal in Belgravia' (2012) too. From one Holmes adventure to another!

Thanks to Network's recent sale I was able to pick up series one of "The Flaxton Boys". It was a bonus to find Paul Darrow playing a major role in one episode.

Set in 1854, Captain Stearman of the Royal Horse Artillery is looking after a special gun to be used in the Crimean War.

Paul in his Hendrix phase.

The boy in the brown jacket is Peter Firth (Double Deckers, Dominick Hyde, etc). Amazing to look at this boy of about 15 and realise he is the quite mature Harry Pearce from "Spooks".

There are some scenes of Captain Stearman riding his horse, but I'm not sure if they're Paul or not. When he leads his party off, his horse starts wheeling round rather than going forwards. We then see them ride out in formation but they keep the nose of Paul's horse out of shot so perhaps someone was in front leading it? Later on we see some riding but it is done in long shot or mid range, and the Captain's hat is so far down over his face you can't see much more than his moustache.

There's a slight greenish tinge to the picture at the start of the episode, but it settles down into something ... browner as the show goes on.

It was also nice to see James Hayter lurking about in the background in a few scenes.

Just watched the episode on YouTube. Amazing how easily plots were foiled in those days! Unbelievable racial stereotyping from comic Russian to boyo Irish - all tricked by two boys amazingly simply. PD dreamy but very English. Charmingly innocent - how did Peter Firth move from this to Spooks?
