Would have made far more sense to have the whole of Aftermath and Powerplay, and then a heavily edited Volcano.

Or no Volcano at all, but as much of Harvest of Kairos as would fit.

Mind you, on the real botch job that is "The Beginning" (four episodes rather than three makes for some key scenes to get edited out), I would have preferred far more of the scene-setting TWB. I reckon an Avon fan had their scissors out for that one, and made sure he stayed in and Blake got cut out Grin Grin

Wouldn't surprise me. I'm sure there are those out there who never watch TWB because as far as they're concerned, the series only begins after Avon appears. Oops

Hmmm that may be a trifle unfair. I'm a massive Avon fan and I love The Way Back - it's one of my favourite episodes Grin

Of course I didn't mean YOU, Meegat! And I'm sure you're not the only Avon fan who likes TWB. However...

Well, let's just say at Horizon's 10th Anniversary party in January 1988 - on the actual 10th anniversary of the very first ep of B7 - it was decided to skip TWB and watch Spacefall instead.

It's okay, I know you didn't mean me. I was objecting on behalf of all Avon fans, I guess because all the ones I've had the good fortune to meet have been very intelligent and could see past Avon's trousers - if you know what I mean?!! Grin

Oh, you've just made me laugh, thank you! I needed cheering up because I getting a bit depressed about Patrick McNee. 'Seeing past Avon's trousers' - the red leather ones, right?! LOL Grin

Yes, you made me smile, too Meegat! I know exactly what you meanGrin

We've just started re-watching B7 from scratch (last time we did them in order was in 2014) and I couldn't imagine doing so without watching TWB - apart from all the obvious reasons, it's a wonderful transition into Spacefall . Course, as a (nicking meegat's words) massive Avon fan, naturally I fully appreciate all Avon's talents! GrinGrin

What have I done!?!?

I don't mean inadvertently setting you lot off about Avons Trousers, which Orac would have predicted was inevitable anyway. I've just bought the whole series of 52 on VHS off of ebay. I know. Sorry if I beat any of you lot to it, but they're mine! all mine! Or will be when they turn up.

As an experiment in televisual time travel, I think I'm going to start watching one episode a week, commencing on January 2nd 2016 - 38 years after first broadcast, if I'm not mistaken, then leave gaps between series. Madness...

You haven't done anything!!!
Us slightly 'mature' Avon Ladies have been like this since Monday 9th Jan 1978...just after 7.15pm in fact.
And don't wait...start now!!!!!!

Good work, Zhu!

The first series takes several episodes to set everything up so you might find it a bit slow compared to the way things are done today, but stick with it. B7 is a fantastic series and familiarity with the characters really pays off as you go along. Stick with it, watch it all the way through, and don't watch or read anything that might tip you off as to what happens in any episodes (spoilers, reviews, episode guides, youtube music videos made with footage from the show...).

Ah well. I already started working on the compilation videos, so have slightly spoilered myself!

It was part way through the first one, which was probably The Way Back - that I decided it was definitely worth investing (both time and a small amout of money!) in the full series, there is a lot of entertainment to be had (I especially liked the orwellian car park).

Another historical question, for my weird time travel experiment - were there any B7 books or comics published at the time of the broadcasts? I know of the Marvel series, but that came after? Also is there a good episode guide or book of production notes that could be read after each episode that might add to the fun?

Glad you're getting to view this show. Hope you enjoy it! Still very fond of it after all these years.

There were three "Blake's 7" novelisations published in conjunction with the original series:

"Blake's 7" by Trevor Hoyle; this was published in paperback in December 1977 (i.e. just before the show aired) and hardback in May 1978 (after Series A had finished)
"Blake's 7: Project Avalon" by Trevor Hoyle; this was published in paperback in January 1979 (concurrent with the start of Series B)
"Blake's 7: Scorpio Attack" by Trevor Hoyle: this was published in hardback and paperback in September 1981 (a few episodes into Series D)

The Marvel "Blake's 7" magazine appeared just before transmission of Series D in September 1981 and ran concurrent with Series D ... in fact concluding at the same time as repeats of Series D in 1983.

There's a few good books around on the show, but it really depends on your tastes and what you're after. If it's production notes then "Liberation" by Alan Stevens and Fiona Moore covers a fair bit of it as I recall.

Have fun with it all! :)

All the best

Andrew

PS: Oh, and the three annuals from World, published August 1978, 1979 and 1980.

There's the Blakes 7 Programme Guide by Tony Attwood - this has episode-by-episode cast list and synopses, character profiles, production photos, interviews, an index, articles, etc. (Okay, I declare an interest - hubby and I were among the contributors to the revised and updated 1994 edition!)

There's an episode guide on Wikipedia and information on other books and publications on the main B7 Wikipedia page. To avoid encountering spoilers (and believe me, you ain't seen nuthin' yet), scroll up from the bottom of the page rather than down from the top.

I remember those tapes! As a kid a didn't know what they were so stuck to the numbered volumes.

I did eventually see them later. Last year I bought an old Aftermath copy at a second hand books store and took the cover out so it can grace my wall. Now I wish I could find cheap versions of the other VHS stuff, because I love the box art on them.
