B7 VHS Question
Zhu Bajie
I've recently acquired a few VHS tapes of Blakes 7 -

The Beginning
The Duel
ORAC
The Aftermath

The cassette boxes are dated 1990.

I've only seen bits and pieces of the series before, and want to come into it fresh - so am trying to avoid reading spoilers, episode synopsis and all that. So my question is... do these video releases contain the complete series or are some episodes or scenes missing?

Cheers!

These VHS tapes are the Edited versions of several episodes.
I'm sure there are members here who can tell you precisely what's what.
But from my slightly dimming memory,The Beginning is the first 4 episodes edited together; Duel is another couple of episodes later on in series A, Orac likewise, parts of series A and the start of B.
And Aftermath covers the first 2 episodes of series C.
There were 26 cassettes tapes produced by the Beeb. I sold mine a few years ago once I had the DVDs, regretted it ever since and have now aquired all 26 again!!
To answer your question..these tapes do not contain the complete series and there are scenes missing.
I also have these 4 edited tapes and have copied a couple over onto a DVD...which reminds me, I must plug the Video back in and record the other 2 tapes......

Hey, thanks Sue. That's exactly what I wanted to know - and a quick answer too!

I think I might watch through these "edited highlight" versions, then if I get hooked I can follow up with the complete series - or is doing that likely to spoil the series or give the wrong impression of it?

I think you should watch it from episode 1.
There are so many things to watch out for; so much is left unsaid. Grandson remarked that there seemed to be alot more going on in the background and he found laugh out loud moments and really shocking moments too.
So immerse yourself, again, in the B7 universe.
I was hooked the moment Mr Thomas spoke the last line in The Way Back..'No, I'm coming back.'...and that was in Jan 1978!!!!

Hi Zhu Bajie and welcome to Horizon. Littlesue has steered you right. The VHS tapes you have are edited parts of several episodes patched together. The original VHS, and DVD episodes comprise 52. The VHS tapes have two episodes on each, hence 26 tapes in total. So what you have are not complete episodes but a sort of story arc made by the BBC in around 1990.

There certainly may be spoilers in the tapes but if you cannot acquire the complete set of Blake's 7 (52 episodes) than you may want to watch the tapes you have and see if they appeal to you and compel you to want to buy the entire series. Of course, most of us here would say to buy the series, but that is entirely up to you. But we hope you get hooked like us and grow to love the series.

As to spoiling the series if you watch these edited versions, I doubt it will spoil anything. There are quite a lot of twists and turns to the series as it winds its way to the last episode, so go ahead and and watch and if you get hooked, there is always Horizon here to come back to and discuss your new obsession. All the best!

Hey, thanks for the warm welcome guys! Yes I'm already obsessed and I haven't even started watching them yet! Lol! I definitely need a Corgi Liberator as I remember chewing the pointy bits off one as a nipper.

Does anyone have details on the episode names each the video are comprised of?

Hi Zhu, and welcome!

The episodes on the compilation VHS's are as follows:

1. 'The Beginning' - The Way Back, Spacefall, Cygnus Alpha and Time Squad.
2. 'Duel' - Seek–Locate–Destroy, Duel and Project Avalon.
3. 'Orac' - Deliverance, Orac and Redemption.
4. 'Aftermath' - Aftermath and Powerplay.

As littlesue says, the first two compilations are from Season A, 'Orac' is covers the end of Season A and beginning of B, 'Aftermath' is the beginning of Season C. These are not complete episodes, but they do provide enough of a flavour to send you scurrying to B7 DVDs on Amazon to get the full episodes and extras!

As for Corgi Liberators, these turn up on eBay from time to time - I know it's tempting, but do try not to chew off the pointy bits, okay? Wink

Really? How very odd. I adore Sarcophagus, but it's such an unusual ep, not really representative of the rest of the series. Or perhaps that's the point...?

Not really sure, but there's a massive shift of tone at that point of the edited release. Would have made far more sense to have the whole of Aftermath and Powerplay, and then a heavily edited Volcano.

Mind you, on the real botch job that is "The Beginning" (four episodes rather than three makes for some key scenes to get edited out), I would have preferred far more of the scene-setting TWB. I reckon an Avon fan had their scissors out for that one, and made sure he stayed in and Blake got cut out Grin Grin

Or no Volcano at all, but as much of Harvest of Kairos as would fit.

Wouldn't surprise me. I'm sure there are those out there who never watch TWB because as far as they're concerned, the series only begins after Avon appears. Oops

Well, I was hooked after the last line of TWB...but then a certain computer expert hoved into view...that did it!!

In case you purchase the DVD sets, don't watch the trailers! In particular not the trailer for series 4 on the series 3 set. It tells you everything that you don't want to know in advance.

Hmmm that may be a trifle unfair. I'm a massive Avon fan and I love The Way Back - it's one of my favourite episodes Grin

Sue & Meegat, I don't think Travisina is talking about you. But I have seen reviews of The Way back giving it one out of five, simply because it doesn't have Avon in it Wink

Of course I didn't mean YOU, Meegat! And I'm sure you're not the only Avon fan who likes TWB. However...

Well, let's just say at Horizon's 10th Anniversary party in January 1988 - on the actual 10th anniversary of the very first ep of B7 - it was decided to skip TWB and watch Spacefall instead.

When I first introduced Grandson to B7 I started with Spacefall because I knew he wouldn't be able to sit through TWB.
He has watched it since and is fascinated by how Blake got arrested etc. and what the Powers that be got up to; for instance when Van Glynn mentioned the Tunnels, he turned to me and said, 'Tunnels? That man didn't say anything about tunnels.' And then of course our nice friendly lawyer said the same thing.
TWB is quite a complicated story and by today's standards quite slow...well compared to what passes for TV now.
I've been absolutely rivetted by Jonathan Strange and am mortified that the last episode is on Sunday, but I've met a couple of people that haven't been able to get into it because it isn't like Poldark or Downton Abbey and you really have to sit up and take notice.

From memory, just about everyone gets cut out of The Way Back on "The Beginning" - it's over in about ten minutes!

"The Beginning" can be viewed on YouTube (albeit in poor VHS quality and with Japanese subtitles).
