Rewatch Oz - Dr Who: The Time Meddler

I love the fact that "gullible peasants" turn out to be much smarter than the Monk gives credit for, and help bring down his plans.

Exactly. Plus cheating on the lottery and going bet into the past and making sports bets.... e.g. the year the 100/1 outside won the Grand National Grin Grin

Great minds

Yes, the Monk has the right idea. All this "hero" stuff from the Doctor is way too dangerous. Wink

It's refreshing that the Monk is just a bit irresponsible rather than what you'd call evil.

I don't think I could imagine Butterworth playing someone evil.

The Anglo-Saxons fight back.

The scene showing the brutal death of the Vikings no longer exists... it was cut by sensors and never retrieved.

But the implied rape stayed? Weird.

A nice embellishment in the novel is that the Monk actually only returns to read the Doctor's letter several months later... after travelling down to Hastings, but getting there just as the battle is finishing.

Fun rewatch. See you next week guys.

The Monk finally loses her cool, when he realises he's stranded.

And then the faces over the end titles... lovely.

Fantastic story.

Yes, we’re left in no doubt what happened to Edith. There’s that scene where she is found, when at first, viewers are left wondering if she’s been murdered, then it becomes obvious she is alive but something dreadful has happened to her. The Anglo-Saxon characters in “The Time Meddler” are well-written and portrayed. The Monk treats them as “gullible peasants”, but pays the price, as Wulnoth works out he’s up to no good, and they help bring down his plans. And there’s also the spirit of Edith. Immediately post-rape, she’s badly traumatized, but she recovers and proves useful later in the story.

I guess the reason the scene where Edith is found stays in is because we don’t actually see the rape. On the other hand, the death of the Vikings was actually seen, and so fell foul of the foreign sensors’ scissors. I’d say the former is actually more disturbing because it’s part of the narrative whereas there is no follow up to the death of the Vikings, although I don’t think there’s a need to cut any of it.
