It's interesting because I think Blake, Avon et al could easily have been played by black actors and the issues transferred to a struggle for racial equality. Avon would be the successful scientist/doctor/lawyer working for the whites and not really interested in anything but his own success and survival and Blake running an underground resistance and railroad. Gan as an ex slave - stock equalisation act notwithstanding. Even Cally and her mysticism would have worked. Perhaps if they ever do remake the show this would be the way to go.

Annie, that is an amazing idea. I hadn't considered it before, but an AR set during the US civil war or the civil rights movement of the 1960s would work very well. I haven't seen anything like that done before; unfortunately it is well beyond my small writing talent.

Anniew
Ellen I think it's beyond mine too. I wondered even in the future whether there could still be divisions based on race rather than class ( deltas, betas, alphas (white) . The white alphas would control the political and military organisations, betas would be primarily white with a few very gifted blacks and work in finance science, medicine, transport, police. Deltas would be service grades with low educated whites getting better jobs that clever blacks. Black criminals would be exported as slaves to agricultural planets like Cygnus Alpha though some would work as personal slaves to the very wealthy. ( Gan would be such a slave because of his exceptional strength)

I'm not sure how Dayna would be a racial stereotype.

I've gotten behind listening to these, my next to listen to is the Darth Vader in White Mink one.

Reminds of a story told about one director - possibly Vere Lorrimer - asking her to act like she was back in the wilds of Africa, only for Josette to laugh it off and point out she was from Leicester.

It certainly sounds like Vere.

Well I thought I might chime in since I've listened to a few of these with mrolag;

I find it to be a 50/50 mix of infuriating and interesting.

I sometimes cringe at how obnoxious and pompous they sound when they criticize the budget/costumes/story or make some childish comments and go off on tangents that I equate to the type of things said in the nuwho fandom and trying to get it to leak into B7. STAY AWAY "fangirls" you cannot have B7! NO! (For example comments about making cuddly toys out of characters and making them fight).

But at the same time it's interesting to hear other people talk about something that I'm genuinely interested in- to hear other people's opinions on it and theories. To listen to someone watch for the first time (I wonder how many of the comments and sentiments I shared with her).

I have episodes I LOVE and want to hear how much they love it (and get super P'd off when they diss it) and I have episodes I HATE, which, equally, I want to hear if they have the same criticisms and dislikes.
I will admit they're very knowledgeable, but there are major gaps in their knowledge or they are deliberately being overly cynical. But I do hear the genuine love and affection they have for the show- and that does shine though.

We have, however, taken a break from listening because the last episode had us so frustrated. We paused it multiple times to have a good moan and criticize their lack of understanding, over analyzing or just completely missing the point.

One of my biggest qualms is in the way they interpret Vila. Vila, to me, is not the character they believe he is. They totally miss the mark on him and it keeps cropping up and I just get so protective of his character that it overshadows my ability to continue listening.
BEGIN RANT: To explain what I'm on about- I think they think he's actually an idiot and coward- which he is not- and they keep commenting on his foolishness. He is so much more intelligent than he lets others believe, and that's why Avon and Vila play off each other so well- Avon see's though the act, and knows that Vila has taken on this character to protect his self-interest (which Avon can completely side with!). Avon continues to play along, teases him and treats him as a 'fool' but Avon knows, and Vila knows, he's actually got one on everyone in the room. Sometimes the writers of the show itself forget that he isn't actually an idiot and make him do something dumb (ex. Powerplay), but the writers who do know him give him great episodes (ex. City at the Edge of the World). The people in this podcast fall within the former, and it bothers me soooooo much! END RANT

But all in all, it's just nice that there's something out there for B7 fans to listen to that's new and fresh and fun. So I wouldn't wish ill will on it, lol. I know I take it far too seriously!

I'll get back to listening to it, I'm sure!

I love the podcast because I Love hearing people's views about the series and it seems to attract highly intelligent people. I agree that I sometimes find some of the podcasters a little pompous but I do like the way they tie in the programme to the sci Fi genre or comment on the directing ( wife and Blake were good on this) about which I know zilch. It also makes me laugh.

I think Vila is a character it's difficult to 'get' - even by the writers- and it's a tribute to Michael Keating that he manages to bring depth to the role when he's often used by them as comic relief. The character grew up on me slowly and I only began to really like him in series 4 but in some ways I always recognised he was the most complex of characters - He combines a dark side ( let's space him!) with a serious professional criminal past, he's a recidivist, often sexually inappropriate and yet somehow sympathetic, trusting ( hence his horror in Orbit) funny, clever, friendly, even sexy at times and he can be authoratitive too. Perhaps he'll grow on the bloggers!

You beat me to it, GC! I've just finished listening.
Deliverance, just in time for Saturday's Horizon Downunder Rewatch -

Another enjoyable podcast, with a mix of intelligent debate, some cruel (but not entirely undeserved) comments and some laugh-out-loud moments.

Mr Sexy Voice got a bit harsh, but I think his love for the show shone through.

In this podcast they speculate that at some point Terry Nation will make up guest character names by reversing an existing character name, but they couldn't think of any B7 instance (so far).
If anyone's got a wordpress or whatever account & can send them a comment (or a tweet?) you could remind them of Nova from 02.SpaceFall....

The Down&Safe folks do sometimes remark on the costumes....
So far (haven't finished podcast yet) they haven't remarked on "one of my favorite cheeses" of the episode. In 07.MissionToDestiny there were "Space-cups" = white styrofoam cups with shiny silver metallic tape around them, on the Liberator flight deck (remember?). Now in 12. Deliverance they took that idea & ran with it to make a "Space Cardigan" with shiny GOLD metallic tape on it!
The costume/props budget compensations are just so hilarious. They don't really matter to the goodness of the show (can overlook them), but at the same time I find them utterly funny & so amusingly inventive!
