Down & Safe Podcast

Of course they mention Arena! But I will say Star Trek was not the first show to use this trope. I'm pretty sure an episode of the Outer Limits did it first and it originally came from a short story in the 50's.

But I haven't heard the episode yet, just read the about post.

It's here - The One with the Gorn.

Yes, they mention Arena, and also the ep of the Outer Limits, the original story (also called 'Arena' by Frederic Brown - and who did and did not pay him a copyright fee). They also went back to classical literature - where champions fight duels to the death on behalf of their armies, and talked about the characters of Giroc and Sinofar (after a bit of you-know-why sniggering to begin with) - and the role of 'witches' in Celtic mythology...

The Down & Safe crew are very knowledgeable and interesting!

Amal has the vapours because Blake says 'Safely Down' instead of 'Down and Safe' - "Don't tell me we named our podcast after something he only says once!" and Scott (I think) had me in hysterics with his description of Vila's outfit. I won't spoiler what he said Smile
And they end the podcast talking about Wacky Races...

Gauda we may disagree about latest Who but we agree about the enjoyment to be had from Down and Safe!! I'm one big grin.
Just because I can't sing doesn't mean I won't.

If I got a bit mean and grumpy over there I do apologise for that. I akin New Who to my fave sports team that is having a long slump of playing badly. I'm passionate, maybe too much.

As for this show, it's a delight. Though the two week wait kills me! I just wanna get to Dayna already!

I think Glover was in a Hartnell episode too, but not as a baddie!

Ahh no apology necessary. Your passion and knowledge shine through. I come at the series from a shallower perspective! I adored Tom Baker. I adore Peter Capaldi. I prefer season 4 stories to modern ones but think Moffats ok because Capaldi is so brilliant. ( in the same vein I will defend Meglos and Horns of the Nimon) Shallow.

But Down and Safe makes me laugh out loud.

Me too!

I love their different accents. I could listen to Scott-from-Wisconsin read the phonebook, his voice is so gorgeous.

And I love how much they loved Julian Glover in this latest podcast Smile

Annie I like Meglos too! And Nimon is... well it is what it is, but I have a good time when I watch it. As for Capaldi, I think he's the best actor in the role since the new show started, I just wish the stories were stronger.

As for Down and Safe and a certain guy from Wisconsin? Well He to me is like that guy in Black Books that Fran likes to listen to on the radio.

On a weird tangent here but Michelle after seeing all of Black Books informed me I was not Bernard, I was Fran. A crazy wino. My sister gets me.

My earlier problem with the Down&Safe podcast being very low-volume level has vanished - the last few have had a fine sound level. So if someone here got in touch with them about it - thank you very much!
(Or it might've been someone somewhere else on the planet who also noticed the low volume)
Looking forward to hearing the 10.Breakdown podcast over the weekend.

I totally would listen to Scott read the phonebook. I'm planning to treat myself to the new episode tonight Grin

Yup I agree. Her being a newbie just reminds me of watching the show with Della a year or more ago.

They share a spontaneous, fearless, unaffected enthusiasm and honesty which I enjoy. sue Perryman has same quality ( well not such obvious enthusiasm for the show but for life!)

I dunno. I kinda distrust anyone who doesn't like the Robots of Death. I wasn't a fan of that blog, but much like my Who addiction I had to look at it every week.

Me too. Even when they're finding plot or character holes (eg Cally's one-way telepathy) their enthusiasm for the show shines through. Amal the newbie is pure joy to listen to as the series unfolds for the first time for her, while the other three, who are seasoned veterans and know what's coming, share a lot of in depth and behind the scenes things. And as I said upthread, great voices and accents - makes a good listening experience.

Probably the best episode yet and I liked Amal's insights. I think she'll love Dayna
