Liberator flight deck

Exterminator - wow - just wow! Read PD's autobiography recently and he writes the seats were lethally dangerous and uncomfortable and so the cast took every opportunity to walk about the flight deck rather than use the seats. Seeing your reconstruction pics I fully understand why!
Just because I can't sing doesn't mean I won't.

I'm sure I don't really want to sit on it if I can help it, Annie!!

It's been a very interesting day today.

First, I got a box from Jim Costello. The panels for the pods have arrived!! Words fail me, they are SO good!! I cannot begin to describe how happy I am!

Second, I cut out the card "fence" for dividing the front part of the mould in two and fixed it in place.

A little plasticine to seal the join, and I can start casting!!

I am speechless with admiration! Your work is amazing, and the panels are wonderful!

Those panels look the biz, Exterminator! I wonder if Jim is working from the Horizon Technical Manual? The panel with the hand interface is definitely in the manual but not necessarily on screen (that's not meant as a slight, by the way. I feel pleased to see the manual still getting some use. If only we could pester Paul Holroyd for the next part!).

By gum though, I really want to have a turn at flicking all those switches up and down! "Zen, increase speed to standard by eight!" Hmm, just imagine when you show this lot off. You'll have a bunch of grown-ups playing spaceship captain all over the place! "It's my turn now!" "I'm next!"

Looking forward to seeing it in Oct!..

That's if Clare will give me time off to 'play'. Wonders if EU work directive applies to B7 fan events.. Grin

Hmm I know where Mr Holroyd lives.. hmm maybe its time to apply some heat! It's been at least 20 years since the release of the last part of the technical manual. Being busy at work is not a valid excuse! Pfft

In fact I remember asking about the next instalment at the Who's 7 '94 Convention!

Very nice effort though Exterminator.. Waves arms... Me..me...my turn next.. pick me! Smile

Go for it, PS! Tell him to get busy because I hate to see a grown man cry, especially when I'm the man.

I agree, Jim has done a cracking job on the panels! He's got a laser cutter, there's no way I could use hand tools to cut out acrylic sheet that neatly and precisely.

The B7 Technical Manual was actually my start point, but more to get a "feel" of the whole thing as opposed to measurements etc. When I build things, I always try to get measurements from the original item, if possible. In this case, I measured Mat Irvine's teleport panel, the only surviving piece of set that's left. I passed the dimensions on to Jim, and he worked out everything else. I must say, if the teleport panel hadn't survived, I probably wouldn't have attempted this, as there wouldn't be anything that's a "given" on which to base the rest.

i20.photobucket.com/albums/b247/captainparsnip/cygnus061.jpg

As to the actual panels themselves - the blue "hand" panel DOES make an appearance, in "Cygnus Alpha" (see above, second from the left), alongside the two panels that eventually became the teleport (this panel layout is what my version is based on). There seems to be at least a dozen different control panel designs, but due to lack of any continuity, panels seem to be placed randomly, and they change every time the flight deck set is assembled!

Looks like my next B7 build is going to be a "Queue Here" sign!! Grin

By the way - Jim made these panels for me, but this isn't exclusive - if anyone wants one, I'd be more than happy to pass on his details. I think he will be making other panel designs as well.

Exterminator, what an impressive job you are doing again! Wonderful!
I hope, one day, there will be a permanent "Blake's 7 exhibition" (museum) somewhere /somehow. Your work is too precious for incidental view!

Thanks Exterminator, that's good to know. I'd seen it as a comment made about the Horizon Technical Manual (perhaps in one of the old newsletters) but I'd never looked for myself - hence the cautious "but not necessarily on screen".

It just goes to show that Zen was always right - "Wisdom must be gathered" - particularly by this unit.

@Joe - when I have a moment, I'll have to see if I can make a definitive list of all the flight deck panels.

@Lurena - thank you for your kind words. permanent B7 exhibition, that would be a nice idea, particularly as I have no idea where I'm going to keep the thing when it's built! Ah well, I'll worry about that later, that's what "later" is for!

What we need is one of these so called 'Pop Up' things...has anyone got a large horse box they don't want? Having watched George Clark's Amazing Spaces, these are the things to have.
I mentioned something along the lines of this to Gary at Smallspace...somewhere to keep all thse lovely props and costumes etc and turn up at the various conventions etc.
I've even seen a caravan open up to reveal a small stage etc...now that would be cool. Have the LIbby flight deck installed in one of those things..with lights.
Sorry, my imagination is running riot...........................
Cold.....you don't know the meaning of cold.

Exterminator: May I then suggest building an even newer shed to keep all your builds in? Grin

If you need some extra storage space Exterminator, I'm sure that I could be persuaded! Pfft

I'm sure I can squeeze it in somewhere (I might nail it to the ceiling, there's nothing on that yet).

All you need is Timelord Technology; I remember you built the Tardis entrance.
You should build the whole thing; it's big on the inside.
I'm almost convinced you can do that as your work is so good!

What we need is some kind of flying ship, a space ship maybe, with loads of room inside to liberate all these props......could call it 'The Liberator' now where have I heard that before.....

I can't believe it's been over two weeks since I posted any updates about the B7 flight deck station! I've been busy ...

Well, I've now finished making the mould for the chair. The mould sections have been cleaned off, any minor imperfections filled, and the whole thing has been drilled and bolted together.

i20.photobucket.com/albums/b247/captainparsnip/IMG_6225.jpg

For the moment, I've shifted emphasis to the base. To make sure I don't go hideously wrong, I'm making a quick quarter-scale model of the whole thing. I can use it to check relative sizes and positions of all the elements (like the central part of the base is the right length, the pods aren't too close to the chair, that sort of thing). I've just got to make the "table" that the pods sit on, then I'll be ordering the wood to build it.
