Liberator flight deck

Oooh that's great! Am looking at the flight deck with fresh eyes when I re watch episodes.
Just because I can't sing doesn't mean I won't.

Well that's a serious lure to get me to GP 3...

I've been doing some more research into the Liberator flight deck chairs. Something I'd not noticed before is that the actual seat has a shaped part that actually sticks out slightly. like a bike saddle. I've included some screencaps, and you can see what I mean (circled in red). there's also this quote I found from the designer Roger Murray-Leach in "Blake's 7 The Inside Story" by Joe Nazzaro and Sheelagh Wells, which confirms my observation:

The other concept was the way that people might sit or work at their station when they had a choice of how heavy they were in space. Rather than put everyone in chairs, I thought it might be fun if we gave them a completely different seating position, which we did. It was almost like a bicycle saddle with a back rest, that you straddled, which led to quite a few ribald comments, particularly from the female crew.

As a side note, I have ordered the plastazote foam for the "inside" of the seat, and I've also requested some foam samples for the circular pads on the chair's back.

Amazing find. Never noticed that.

Me neither also ... oh, you know what I mean!

I've only been watching B7 for about 300 years, and it took me doing something bonkers like this to notice!

Funny, isn't it? I thought the bike saddle arrangement was a well known bit of design, like the vacuum cleaner hose/hoover tubes!

Lurena
I also thought it was well known; we discussed this earlier on the previous forum.
First I thought the seats were stripped airforce ejection seats, but they are more the like racing car seats. I recall a brand "Tillits" (or something like that) was mentioned.
Wasn't it Michael Keating complaining about health troubles because of them?

Although I have never seen these they are described as saddle like in the original Hoyle novelisation.

In the early episodes the cast do seem to sit onto them strangely (first 6 episodes or so, mainly during the 1st season) Suggesting that they weren't your standard bucket seat..

Particularly I recall an exchange between Avon and Vila (SLD?) where Avon slides off a chair akin to dismounting a bike.

I was always curious and meant to find out, thanks for doing all the hard work .. Just proves you can 'learn' something new every day Smile

Thanks! More news, the plastazote foam has arrived, so I can get on with the next bit.

So I got on with the next bit:

i20.photobucket.com/albums/b247/captainparsnip/IMG_6043.jpg

That's the plastazote stuck around the sides, now for the back panel.

i20.photobucket.com/albums/b247/captainparsnip/IMG_6056.jpg

Good old bendy MDF, just the thing for a flexible piece such as this.

i20.photobucket.com/albums/b247/captainparsnip/IMG_6055.jpg

It fits! The back was covered with some thinner plastazote, and everything was "painted" with matting resin.

i20.photobucket.com/albums/b247/captainparsnip/IMG_6058.jpg

Planning the "saddle":

i20.photobucket.com/albums/b247/captainparsnip/IMG_6060.jpg

A quick mockup with a test version of the saddle, plus some card circles to test the size and position of the foam circles.

i20.photobucket.com/albums/b247/captainparsnip/IMG_6071.jpg

Looks about right - the circles are 6" in diameter.

Time to build the saddle piece "for real". It's ABS sheet ...

i20.photobucket.com/albums/b247/captainparsnip/IMG_6072.jpg

... topped with filler ...

i20.photobucket.com/albums/b247/captainparsnip/IMG_6076.jpg

... and sprayed with filler-primer.

i20.photobucket.com/albums/b247/captainparsnip/IMG_6077.jpg

Everything else has now had two further coats of matting resin ...

i20.photobucket.com/albums/b247/captainparsnip/IMG_6078.jpg

... so I can now fill the gaps and sand everything flat.

More soon!!

Well, I've been having a lot of fun since my last post!

The inside surfaces are a smooth as I can get them. I've added the sloping sides to the "saddle" and blended it all in. I've also rounded off the very sharp edge I'd made around the perimeter.

Some new fibreglass supplies have arrived, so I can get on with making the moulds for this bit.

More soon!

I never knew the Liberator chairs could 'lift and separate' so well. Ouch! Great job Exterminator. When will you get around to building the rest of Liberator?

Reversing the polarity of the neutron flow. I bet that means something. It sounds great.
