B7 Newbie Conversion Attempt
stoke_rob
THE CONDITIONING: As I work a nightshift in reception / security at a hotel I find in the early hours I have free time to watch some dvds. So I have persuaded my 24 year old colleague (raised on Star Wars, Xbox and the like...) to give Blake's 7 a try starting tonight. The deal is we watch the first two episodes and if he he wants to see more then we continue, and if not we abandon the show. So, what do you think the outcome will be? Will I be able to convert him into the ways of 1970s BBC sci fi? Does B7 stand up without the sophisticated budgets and CGI of current series? I'll report back to Space Command with the outcome...

Good luck - do let us know what he thinks!

Gauda Cheese introduced B7 to his younger sister last year, and blogged about it here: -

... which shows that there is an audience out there amongst today's younglings!

I started Grandson on B7 with Episode 2, Spacefall.
He had watched all of the Champions and had even asked to watch some a few more times. For some reason he likes 'The Experiment'.
So I asked him if he would like to watch another TV show from the old days.
On went Spacefall.
50 mins later.."Can I watch another episode please?"
He's not over here as often because he's grown up an bit, but on Friday evenings, when he stays as his Mum has to go to work very early on a Saturday, I shall start again, now that the Musketeers has finished! (And I can get the TV/DVD combi to play the DVD!!!)

I talked a twenty-something coworker into watching, so far my only success in recruiting new souls for the faith Grin But he is a Doctor Who fan, so already knew about dodgy '70s special effects.

I think if I was trying to convert someone, I'd show them "Aftermath", "Powerplay", "City", "Rumours" and "Death-Watch".

Basically, all the ones with that rather nice computer expert in them!
I must admit, Grandson kept saying 'Nan!' everytime I sighed during our own rewatch whenever that rather nice computer expert appeared...that may explain why he took the remote control off me because I kept pausing it whenever that..............Grin

No - trust me, it doesn't work!
'Rumours' was one of the first episodes I ever saw, and it made very little impression because:

a. I hadn't seen 'Countdown'
b. I hadn't got to know Avon as he developed through Seasons A, B and first half of C. If this is your first introduction to Avon, it's an interesting drama but lacking in emotional wallop.

'City' makes no impression if you don't know that this is Vila being brave and clever after 2.5 Seasons of playing the fool (and being treated as one).

'Aftermath' - why start with the resolution of a cliff-hanger rather than the story arc that led up to it?

The very first ep I ever saw I think was Seek-Locate-Destroy. I'd probably recommend that to a newbie, because it's a full ensemble piece, with each crew member getting to do something useful, as well as showcasing Servalan and Travis.

Well "Aftermath" is the first episode I ever saw, and I was hooked instantly.

"Aftermath" does start in the middle of a story, but then again, so does "The Way Back"... which tells us the tale of Roj Blake several years into his life as rebel leader Wink

If you're going to hook a newbie, it's best to show them the exceptional stuff first, and then they go back and watch the earlier episodes later on.

I really first got into the series when I watched Horizon. I thought the whole ten little Indian story line hilarious and I fell for Avon at once. I was then so hooked! Later I got the videos and watched obsessively.
Just because I can't sing doesn't mean I won't.

Well last nights Blake Watch went very well. I think my colleague was a bit sceptical after 'The Way Back' which is quite slow in pace really although he was intrigued by the notion of a society dosed with suppressants. But the clincher came with episode 2 and the events on the London. He was gently mocking about the budget limitations but started to become interested in the characters. I gave him the choice at the end of 'Space Fall' to continue or move onto something else, he chose to continue so we took in 'Cygnus Alpha' and 'Time Squad' too. I think he is now keen to see what happens to the crew of The Liberator. I would say on the evidence of last night we have a potential new fan in the making. Hurrah!

Sounds like a new fan in the making indeed! The characters only get stronger, and if he's okay with the budget limitations then that's really the only area of the show that's not 100% even by modern standards.
Reversing the polarity of the neutron flow. I bet that means something. It sounds great.

my friend said he'd heard the series was crap, low budget rubbish, he stipulated he would watch two episodes against his better judgement if I'd stop pestering him! I chose the Way Back and Blake....think he's still eating humble pie, after he nicked the rest of my dvds to watch, and listened to Mark of Kane and Logic of Empire in the correct places..., he thought it was amazing

I converted my previous boss - a wee young lad in his mid 20's. (It's sad when you're old enough to be your boss's mum!)

After many discussions about Classic Who and Survivors I foisted my back up S1 DVD's on him (yes, I have 2 sets and some of the video's too). He was so taken by the series that we bought all four seasons for his leaving present. I'm now working on getting him to sign up here...

And those who know me, will know I never waste an opportunity to spread the word!

I think B7 could best be described as an evolutional series. You need to watch all the episodes in order (first time around anyway) to truly appreciate it.

My first episode was Time Squad. If I was starting someone on the series I would do TWB and Space Fall together (TWB is good, but not entirely representative of the rest of the series). Of course, I am both a begin-at-the-beginning personality type and a season 1 fan. Unfortunately the fact that the DVDs are region 2 limits my ability to inflict them on my friends Sad

I have to say my approach to buying the videos in 1992 (they were already up to volume 18, but I worked out how to make my student stretch a bit further so that I could buy them) was scattergun.

So I watched seasons 3 & 4 on original transmission, then most of Season 1 (plus Redemption) via the edited videos, then the episodes in a haphazard fashion throughout Easter and Sunday 1992. I remember the first two volumes I bought were Volume 17 (Children Of Auron and Rumours) and Volume 13 (The Keeper and Star One). I didn’t have a video recorder at university, so I watched the episodes while at home at my parents. It tended to be after they’d gone to bed. I watched all four episodes in go… I finished “Star One” at around 3am and it became my favourite episode for quite a few years.

After watching the videos over and over again, I went several years without watching them. I then did a full series rewatch around 2000, but did it in the order 3/4/1/2, to roughly match the order that I originally saw the episodes Wink

So I was working at a stereo store in the late 1980's when B7 came on in the USA. I taped every episode. A coworker saw the Horizon mag lying on my desk and asked about it. Apparently he'd seen one episode once upon a time.

He expressed interest, so I brought the tapes to work. Not only did he get hooked, but so did another coworker. As it happens, the local PBS station began re-running Blake on Sunday nights. We would all get together at lunch to discuss the episode.

As we headed into S4, I warned them that this was not your typical American TV story of good vs evil. At this point, the original coworker confessed that the one episode he had seen, was Blake, so he knew where this was going.

Thirteen weeks later, Blake aired on Sunday night. Monday at noon, the first coworker and I were at the counter. The second coworker came in. He saw us. His shoulders sagged, his eyes fell, he took a deep breath, looked up, and asked, "Did you know?"

We each confirmed that we did.

He cried, "You Bastards!" loud enough to bring the video manager out of the back room.

I did get a couple of mates interested in B7 at University. One of them kindly recorded his entire pirate DW video collection for me, so I gave him 26 videos of B7 to make a copy of.

Hey Brad, thats just what my boss said when he borrowed my original videos! Said you could have warned me!

I discovered a year or so ago when a co-worker was listening to a Big Finish audio of the new B7. Can't remember all of it, but I do remember thinking it was good so I asked...and he told me there was an original series it was based on. So I searched around. I enjoyed The Way Back & kept going.

This first time I saw Blake. I couldn't believe it. I kept rewinding to make sure I hadn't seen it the wrong way or something. Then I waited. Then I realized. Then I was sad.

Then I said...wow, what an awesome series!
