Guidelines for Signatures

Horizon Signature Policy

Our good ship Horizon has a nice facility where members can add a 'Signature' or 'Sig' to their profile, which will then append itself to every post they make.

This can be done under the Edit Profile option within your main profile menu (at the top left hand corner of your screen). Many members choose not to have a Sig; that is fine too. But you are welcome to add one if desired, provided it fits within the following guidelines, or to leave that section blank, as per the default setting.

It is nice to add a personal touch to your post comments. However, advances in technology have meant that for people enjoying Horizon on the move, Sigs are becoming an issue. An excessive Sig size in terms of amount of space or large file attachments can be problematic for those using mobile devices with limited screen space, or members on slow, unreliable net connections.

We are therefore introducing a Code of Conduct on this feature to place a limit of a maximum height of 100 pixels to a Sig, which equates to five lines of text, including spacer lines (assuming a height of 20 pixels per line of text). Wherever possible, members should try to keep the image and text on one line, within the 100 pixel height limit.

Some permutations of permitted Sig combinations would be:

- A single image (not too animated - static images are preferred), not to not exceed 100 pixels in height and up to a maximum width of 400 pixels (the current board setting for all images)

Or

- A multiple-line quote or links, together with an image. This image would need to be shrunk in order to compensate for the 100 pixel total size. In other words, the total height of the Sig, including all text, links and images should not exceed 100 pixels.

Example: If you have a two-line quote, the image would have to have to be no more than 60 pixels in height to compensate. Alternatively, the image could be positioned adjacent to the text, to save on screen space.

In terms of file size, the image should be optimised for the web environment and have a maximum size of no more than 100kb. Again this is a maximum value, less is preferred. It should be noted that animated images will tend to have larger file-sizes than static images.

In certain situations a member of site staff may request a change of image (sig or avatar) within your profile, if it is deemed to be too distracting with excessive colour or movement, even if it does comply with size and bytes limitations. As with all things, common sense should prevail. If there is any doubt, please contact a member of staff who will do their best to assist and advise and expand upon guidelines.

If we can all follow this code, it will make the site run better on mobile devices, and reduce download times enabling smoother and more efficient reading and browsing for all mobile users.

With regard to the content of signatures, these must not be political (except where referring to the B7 Federation and other fictitious universes) or in any way contentious. We want to keep the site safe, fun and free from divisive RL comments and debate.
